James McAvoy in Michael Hoffman’s The Last Station Trailer
November 24, 2009

Sony Pictures Classics has finally debuted a trailer for Michael Hoffman’s The Last Station, an indie biopic about Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Christopher Plummer stars as Tolstoy and is joined by an all-star cast including James McAvoy as Valentin Bulgakov, Paul Giamatti as Vladimir Chertkov, and Helen Mirren as Sofya Tolstoy. While Plummer should be the central focus, I believe this film centers more on McAvoy, who plays Tolstoy’s private secretary. But that said, this looks extraordinary and everyone in the cast looks phenomenal.

A tale of two romances, one beginning, one near its end, The Last Station illustrates Russian author Leo Tolstoy’s struggle to balance fame and wealth with his commitment to a life devoid of material things.
The Last Station is both written and directed by veteran auteur Michael Hoffman, of Soapdish, One Fine Day, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Emperor’s Club, and the documentary Out of the Blue previously. This is based on Jay Parini’s book of the same name and first premiered at the Telluride Film Festival this year. Sony Pictures Classics is bringing The Last Station to limited theaters starting on December 4th.
